Summarized Review Highlights

Burntwood Lake Lodge earns strong praise overall, with the majority of guests describing it as an outstanding and memorable experience. The lodge carries a reputation for warm, attentive hospitality, with staff members — including guides, kitchen staff, and lodge management — frequently called out by name for going above and beyond. The float-plane arrival, remote wilderness setting, and quality of meals prepared by the in-house chef are consistently highlighted as standout elements. Guests who combine fishing with bear hunting have been particularly enthusiastic, noting that guides work hard to maximize success and share genuinely in the excitement of the trip.

On the fishing side, reviews are positive but come with some nuance. Guests who hire a guide report being taken directly to productive spots and staying on fish throughout the day. However, at least one review notes that self-guided anglers receive limited direction on where and how to fish — meaning those who opt out of hiring a guide may need to put in their own work to locate fish. Weather can also affect fishing conditions, and remote northern lakes are subject to cold fronts that can slow action regardless of effort. The area holds good populations of walleye and northern pike, and having your own electronics (GPS, depth finder) is considered a practical advantage for unguided fishing. Prospective guests should also be aware that rocky structure is common on the water, and checking insurance coverage for outboard motor damage is a tip one experienced visitor passed along.

Burntwood Lake Lodge is best suited for anglers and hunters who want a full-service, staff-supported wilderness experience — particularly those pursuing walleye or northern pike, or combining a fishing trip with a bear hunt. Groups of friends or adult buddies looking for a guided, social trip with solid food and accommodations will likely find it a strong fit. Self-guided anglers who prefer to figure out the water on their own can still have a good trip, but should go in with realistic expectations and be prepared to do some independent exploration. First-time fly-in guests will appreciate the attentive staff and structured experience.

Burntwood Lake Lodge and the staff are absolutely outstanding! Outside of family and important friend trips, this trip was by far the best of my lifetime! I can't thank everyone enough for the hospitality and hard work they put in. Tammy was very helpful in the lodge (and Jerry as we learned we are from the same area and it was a pleasure to meet them). Izzy worked hard making sure we had everything we needed for a day on the boat or in a stand along with her great personality and ability to have fun while doing her job. Michel is not only a great chef, but a great guy with a great sense of humor. While Randy was not our guide, he was helpful with hunting tips, retrieving and skinning my bear. I appreciate all of your help. Paige, our guide, is phenomenal. She worked so hard on getting us on the fish, giving us our best chance to harvest a bear. Both my friend and I were successful and Paige was just as excited as we were. I was fortunate enough to have Paige directly guide me and be part of my harvesting of a bear. To me, it was pure luck how it worked out, yet was an amazing experience to be able to share as the bear was in the site as we rolled up in the boat. In addition, she has a good sense of humor that kept the mood light as I was getting nervous that I may not succeed in harvesting a bear (got it on the last day). Doing a trip like this, there are no guarantees of success. I can say with certainty that this trip still would have been amazing even if I wasn't successful in harvesting a bear. I could go on and on about this group of people, the lodge and location. I highly recommend as it is a trip I will never forget. Thank you again for everything!

The place was great, the fishing was a little slow since the cold weather had moved in the day before we got there. There are a lot of big northerns up there, but finding them and throwing the right lures was a little tough. They don't tell you a whole lot about how and where to fish, but can hire a guide for an extra $125/day, then they will take you to their honey holes and bays that are loaded with fish. I could point them out on a map for you though. [Follow-up post] From Winnipeg to Snow Lake it took us about 7 hours, not sure of the miles though, I think it was close to 380 miles. The road actually isn't too bad for driving, it gets a little bumpy here and there, we did see one van that had went in the ditch. It had started raining and the water pools up on the highway. Our car was hydroplaning quite a bit. I didn't hear anything about Dow lake, they only talked about McGee and fishing there. The Gogals will probably fly you around if you wanted to try and fish other lakes. Also, I would check your home owners insurance to make sure they would cover you in case someone in your group wrecks a lower unit, lots of rocks up there. Our guide even ran into a couple. By the way, we found the walleyes in about 4 feet of water and windy and overcast days, when the sun came out and the wind died down, we found them down to about 8-12 feet. A GPS and a depthfinder are very handy up there. I brought my Marcum unit and it worked very well.

This place is amazing! From flying in on a luxury float plane, to the amazing food at every meal (thanks michel!), to the beautiful untouched scenery, and the knowledgeable guides who make sure you are always on action! I can't say enough about the hospitality and incredible accommodation from all of the staff. I can't wait to go back!
