Summarized Review Highlights

Loch Island Lodge on Lake Wabatongushi in Northern Ontario has an overwhelmingly positive reputation, with the large majority of reviewers being repeat guests — some returning annually for 10, 15, or even 30 years. The owners, Andy and Amy Wilson, are frequently named and praised by longtime guests for their hospitality and steady improvements to the property. The tone across most reviews is enthusiastic, and many guests describe it as their favorite fishing destination in Ontario or Canada. A small number of reviewers, however, found the experience disappointing, citing issues with maintenance, owner accessibility, and inconsistent staff quality, so the lodge does not enjoy a universally perfect record.

Guests consistently highlight several strengths: walleye and pike fishing on Wabatongushi Lake, which is described as productive and reliable when guests are familiar with the water; the dock service, where staff tie up boats, refuel, supply bait, and fillet fish; the food, particularly the American Plan dinners (prime rib, fresh bread, homemade desserts) and the shore lunches of freshly caught walleye cooked over an open fire; and the cedar-strip boats, which divide opinion slightly in feel but are broadly praised for their comfort and performance. Cabins at the main island lodge are described as clean, well-supplied, and comfortable with hot water and electricity. The portage lakes are noted as a reliable fallback for consistent catching. Wildlife — eagles, loons, moose, bear, beaver — is a recurring highlight. Camp Lochalsh on the mainland is a separate, more rustic option with a rougher access road and no meal service, which suits self-sufficient anglers but has drawn some criticism for feeling less remote than advertised and for a higher level of boat traffic on the shared lake.

The most common complaints across negative reviews include: rotted or aging decking and infrastructure at certain parts of the property; inconsistent guide quality, with at least one guest reporting a guide who had little lake knowledge and no formal training; owners who, according to a few reviewers, were physically present but not visibly engaged with guests; and bait availability that occasionally fell short of what was advertised (no minnows in one case). August fishing is noted by multiple guests as slower than other months, though still enjoyable. The access road to Camp Lochalsh is rough and requires a truck. This destination is best suited for groups of fishing buddies, multi-generational family trips, and anglers who want a structured lodge experience with full meal service and attentive dock staff rather than a truly remote fly-in. First-time visitors to the lake are advised to hire a guide, as Wabatongushi is large and can take time to learn. It is less suited to guests seeking complete wilderness isolation, as the lake sees moderate traffic from multiple camps and private cabins.

High Potential, Low Results, Poor Management
This is a bit of a mixed review, but mostly very disappointing. I have been to a number of Lodges in Northern Ontario and this one was the poorest. First, a few of the good things: 1) Dining Room staff were top notch, 2) The accommodations were excellent, and the "student staff" friendly. On the other side of the coin: 1) The fishing guide we had was terrible. He was a student who started in May and had VERY LITTLE knowledge of the lake we were fishing. He told us he had zero guide training, and just liked to try stuff. As such, we ended up trying to explore the lake ourselves. 2) The food was just OK. 3) The dock staff responded to all needs when asked, but did nothing proactively. 4) Cedar strip boats are not my favorite (wobbly), but I knew that coming in. 5) Ownership involvement was zero even though they were present during our visit. They seemed uninterested about their customers experience. They are solely responsible for the poor staff training. This is very different from other Lodges I have stayed at. I noted that a high percentage of the customers were from the USA, and as a Canadian myself, I was embarrassed by the experience they were getting. Canadians are better hosts than this! Not recommended.

Wonderful outfitter. Have been missing this trip since COVID detrailed it. Hoping to get back in 2023. The combination of the outfitter, location, fishing, and general feeling of getting away from it "all" makes this one of my all time favorite places in North America.

Everything we expected and more. The cabins had everything we needed. The staff were exceptional. The 3 meals per day were way better than we could have imagined. The fishing was as expected for August - which was very good. Had the American Plan (all inclusive) which is what we wanted in a vacation. Great way to completely disconnect for a real vacation. Can't wait to book again next year.

We just returned from 10 days at the Otter Island small cabin. EVERYTHING was wonderful and as advertised. The beds and linen were very comfortable. This was our first time there and we have already booked for next June. The fishing is awesome. The boats and motors worked to perfection. Staff and boat crews were very friendly and always there to filet our daily dinner catch and fuel our boat. Two of us caught 67 fish on barbless hooks as we only keep what walleye we want for evening dinner. Several 30" plus pike including one 40". Best fishing and accommodations ever in all the locations I have fished in Ontario and Quebec, including fly in lodges. EVERYTHING WAS AS ADVERTISED.

Great Outpost, Terrible fishing!
Our group stayed in the Isle of Jordan, I have to say this cabin was one of the best we have ever stayed in for an outpost. The limited contact with the staff we had (we were at an outpost so we expected very little) was great. The only thing really lacking was any direction to fish. This lake is a very large body of water. We were told mid week that this time of year there are not much fish around our camp, they have all moved to the south end of the lake. We were under the impression upon booking that this was a more remote fishing location, great fishing, little fishing pressure, and very private. Not so much! The parking lot for our trucks had over twenty vehicles in it for the many other camps on the lake. Not to mention all the private cabins on the lake as well. There was a private cabin next too our outpost that had three dogs in it! We saw many boats and cabins on the lake and I have to say it was the busiest "remote" fishing we have been to in many years. We caught very few fish and the ones we caught were almost all on the small size. It was a Great Outpost cabin, just not a good place to fish.

Shocking
I am v confused by other reviews ive seen on here, so thought i need to write one myself. Went to camp localsh in June with friends. First off, the place has not been looked after for years, it is nothing like advertised online. incredibly run down, trash and old fridges and furniture can be seen about the place.there are cabins that need to be ripped down. the dock is old. the owner walked straight past us when we went to the island to get gas without even a hello. i am mainly shocked that people are giving this place 5 stars...did we go to the same place?? boats were okay but our friends was v leaky. Fishing was bad. really unsure as to why they charge so much to stay here..

I visited Loch Island with my wife last weekend and we had a great time!! We had the Modified American Plan where there is dinner and another meal, we chose the shore lunch. Our cabin was very clean and had lots dishes and pots for us to make our own breakfast. There was a deck with new patio furniture and a BBQ. The lodge building is small but looks nice and had a TV and a pool table. We loved the cedarstrip boat. It was the first time we went in one. We had a trolling motor and a fish finder put on free of charge. It was really great that they gave us unlimited gas since we were out all day in the beautiful weather. The dockhands helped us tie up our boat every time and brought us our bait and cleaned our fish! We caught our limit each day on the Pike and Walleye but released a lot of them since we didn't need to eat them all! When it was rougher out on the lake a dockhand said we should try the Glasgow portage lake. We went down there and did well on Pike (its catch and release only but we definitely could have eaten them at the size they were). There are smallmouth in the portage lake too but we didn't try for them. The trail to get to the boat was abit difficult for my wife because she has a knee problem but we were able to do it. There are wood walkways all around the island. The food was amazing!! Our favorite dinner was Thursday night which was a ham and scalloped potatoes, and we also had steaks on Friday. Shore lunch was the best meal hands down with fresh fish and potatoes fried up everyday outdoors over a fire!! They fileted our fish right in front of us. The staff were very helpful and polite. We are very happy that we came to Loch Island and would like to come back next year if we can!

Many Fishing Trips
Andy and Amy run a wonderful lodge, year in and year out they have a wonderful staff. They offer many different packages and places to stay that offer different levels of pampering and modern amenities. Our group has been coming for over 15 years, we have had between 11 and 19 attendees ranging in age from early teens to late 70's. The boats are great, 18 foot cedar strip, quiet and warm equipped with 15 HP electric 4 strokes. They are good for 2 to 3 fishermen. The cabins are nice and offer good sleeping and cooking conditions and a hot shower. The lake is beautiful, it can be challenging to learn as it is big, if it is your first visit you may want to consider getting a guide. If you are looking for a lot of catching try the portage lakes, they are a sure no miss. All in all Lochisland lodge is an affordable great get away, if you are looking for a relaxing time this will be a great place for you.

Summer Northern Canada Fishing Trip
Upon arrival for the first time it's a bit confusing between the Lodge and the Camp. The Lodge is on an island and if you take the American Plan this is where all the meals will be served. The Camp in on the mainland and is a twenty minute boat ride away from the Lodge. We made our August reservations late and stayed at Camp Lochalsh, which years ago was separate from Loch Island camp. Camp Lochalsh has a lot of history on full display at the recreation room which could use some attention. We were very pleased at the Camp. Our cabin was comfortable, clean, well supplied, with plenty of hot water for showers. The camp is what you expect at a long running fishing camp, But now it has added wifi. At the Camp guests always made a nightly campfire and fishing stories filled the evening. The supplied lap-cedar boats and motors were trustworthy and always fueled and ready to go each morning. Guides welcomed us and spend the first day, or more if requested, to show the better fishing spots on the large lake. Our guide, Ryan, was very friendly, patient, and informative. We were two of over thirty guests at the two facilities. Everyone else that we spoke with was a repeat customer. Some coming for their twentieth year. The downside of August fishing is the fish don't "jump into the boat" but there are no black flies! If your goal is to experience a northern Canada fishing trip this is a great choice.

Amazing Week
This was our third visit and it just keeps getting better. The staff is spot on - always. They are always there to help in anyway while treating you like family (a warm and friendly family that is). The very busy owners (Andy and Amy) continue to make improvements; this year we were surprised with the beautiful boardwalks and private decks for each cabin. The fishing (catching) was incredible (242 walleye in the boat - yeah baby) - next year we will take time to explore the trails and the nearby mining ghost towns. The cedar strip wood boats are so cool and handle beautifully (we now want one). I included a picture of my parents fishing, they joined us the last 3 days. If you are looking for a true north fishing adventure Loch Island Lodge offers that rustic feel with all the modern amenities and it's located in an unbelievable picturesque area. I just can't describe how relaxing and beautiful it is to be out on the lake when the loones start sounding off. Every year we take lots of pictures of the loones and eagles; the first year we were lucky enough to see a moose. We just love it and can't wait to return. Oh - can't forget to mention the delicious meals and the fun shore lunches (walleye, beans, potatoes and a vegie) that are prepared over an open fire everyday at a remote spot on the lake. I miss it already.

5 days of fishing fun!
Just had the opportunity to spend 5 days fishing at Loch Island and it was awesome! The trip to the lodge was enjoyable and scenic. Upon arrival we were met by the staff who showed us around and helped us move our gear to our cabin. The cabin was clean and had comfy beds along with a fridge and stove. The lake is big enough to easily spend a week fishing and there are also back lakes to explore if you feel the need for a change in scenery. The dock staff are super helpful and the boat and motors are top notch. If you enjoy fishing then this is certainly one of the best places in Ontario.

Another Great Trip
Just came back from another fun filled week on Loch Island. Like always the fishing was fantastic. We caught plenty of Walleye for Shore Lunch and our late evening gatherings. Our group is rather large with 20 plus members but Andy and Amy do a great job of accommodating us. This year we had the modified plan which includes a great continental breakfast and a full course dinner. This allows us to stay on the lake all day and cook a shore lunch or eat a sandwich in our boats. The dinners were all yummy with fresh baked bread, salads, meats, pastas, potatoes, and veggies, topped off by a delectable dessert each night. Want coffee with your dessert they have that too. I was a lil let down that Amy didn't have Cabbage Rolls on the menu this year haha!! I guess the Prime Rib made up for it! The cabins had all the clean linens towels soaps and kitchen utensils you need to make for a complete enjoyable stay. The boats and motors are excellent too. Best of all you won't find as much or more for less!!! I could ramble on and on but you get the point.

Always A Great Time
We'll be headed back for our 10th year. Ten years ago, myself and a couple of friends were planning a "fly-in" fishing trip. The idea of flying into a secluded lake and being the only ones on the lake was inviting. However, we figured that for our first time out, perhaps we should find a mix of seclusion and convenience. We found Loch Island Lodge in our research and their Modified American Plan was just what we needed. It allowed us to be on our own, but have the conveniences. The Owners (Andy and Amy Wilson) are great people and their Staff is awesome. Whether it's a question about the best spots to fish or what tackle to use, they are always willing to help. Don't miss the dinners, if you leave the table hungry, it's your fault. Don't worry, you'll have time to go back out after dinner for more fishing. The wooden boats are sturdy and handle well in all weather conditions (unlimited gas!!). The cabins are clean and well furnished. It is nice to have a hot shower at the end of a long day fishing. We've looked at other fishing lodges over the years. In general they offer similar packages, but I always find myself going back to Loch Island Lodge.

Amazing Family Vacation
My Grandsons have been accompanying my son and I to Loch Island for a father/son fishing trip ever since they turned ten. They are now 17 and 19 and while we fish many places together Loch Island is our favorite summer time destination. Amy and Andy take care to make every guest feel welcome and "at home". We fill our take home limit every summer and so far I'm the only one that hasn't made the Walleye catch and release board with a big fish. Maybe next summer!

Probably wouldn't go back.
We found Loch Island Lodge to be lacking in several areas. The owners did not greet us upon our arrival, and barely acknowledged us during our week stay. There are several areas of rotted boards on decking and steps, and we needed to watch every step we took. We actually saw a guest go through a board on the deck while moving his chair. Not all baits were available as advertised. The screen door on our cabin did not shut completely. On the plus side, their crew was wonderful. We spent the most time with Mitch and Melissa, but the whole crew was very accommodating. The cooks were excellent; each and every meal (we were on the American plan) was great. Our cabin (#6) felt private, even though it was fairly close to another cabin. There is a new boardwalk, which is lovely. We enjoyed the wood boats, the lake is beautiful; the sunsets gorgeous.

13 of us spent a week at Lochalsh in July 2015, the cabins were average for a fishing getaway. The employees were helpful when needed. Lochalsh looks like it is in the process of being updated. Loch Island is very nice, we should had requested Lock Island versus Lochalsh. The lake is absolutely beautiful, the fishing was good since it was our first time there and we needed to learn the lake. The boats are cedar and need some tender loving and care. They had night crawlers and leeches but no minnows, stated they could not keep them cold. We drove in from Ohio since the train system was having issues. The drive was very nice and quite a bit to see. Saw a bear on the miners road, several Eagles on the lake and you could hear the Wolves howling at night. Fishing cleaning station was nice. We took our own food so I can not comment on their food. They had a lodge that we all could meet at in the evening to get together and play cards and games that was nice.

My son and I
I just returned from Camp Lochalsh. I wanted a trip for my 13 year old son and I in Canada that was rustic but had some amenities. We booked a trip to Camp Lochalsh which is on the mainland south of Loch Island. For those that don't want to read the whole review, we found exactly what we were looking for. Camp Lochalsh is the old "main lodge" of the Lochalsh resort. Now the main lodge is Loch Island. We were able to drive right up to Camp Lochalsh with my pickup. I wouldn't try it with a car. The road to Camp Lochalsh is easy until Dubreuilville and then it gets progressively rougher, but the trip has great views. The cabin the my son and I stayed in was much larger than needed but it was comfortable and contained a kitchen and bathroom with running water. My son and I took everything in to the cabin that we needed for the week as we stayed on the housekeeping plan. There are no meals provided at Camp Lochalsh. Only at Loch Island. We took in enough food for 3 or 4 meals for the week. That was not a problem because we caught plenty of fish. We caught walleye, northern pike and whitefish. Camp Lochlsh is under renovation and it will be excellent when the renovations are complete. During the renovations, the stay was still excellent and I commend Amy and Andy for working to restore the Camp. All-in-all, it was exactly what I was looking for, a remote fishing camp that has amenities of home including electricity, running water, flush toilets and showers. We didn't get to see any moose but we did see bear, eagles, beavers and much additional wildlife. No cell service is available but Amy and Andy do provide wifi.

pros & cons??? if you are reading this review you will not encounter any cons. without question I'm truly envious of anybody who is able to stay there the entire season. packing up & leaving is always the toughest. as a young angler I use to dream of going to a place like this & its safe to say my dreams are now a reality as an adult. LOCH ISLAND LODGE on WABATONGUSHI delivers world class walleye & pike fishing. there is always somebody in " ready mode " to assist you with all the services the lodge has to offer. there was one spring we went my buddy neglect to bring the proper tackle & thankfully the lodge is/was fully equipped with a wide variety of fishing tackle. all high quality gear from professional brands you would find at BASS PRO or CANADIAN TIRE :) funny...even though there are days when mother nature is doing all she can to ruin your trip, its been proven to me that's when the fishing really comes alive. all of my biggest fish were caught when it was rainy, windy & cloudy. oh ya...remember, your in/on the largest wild game preserve on the planet so keep an eye out. I was lucky enough to see an eastern cougar...are really rare sight one morning. this truly has become one of my homes away from homes :)

Outstanding in all catagories
We have stayed at 5 other lodges over the last 10 years so we have some variety built in. The Loch Island experience has been the best. The whole reason it is better is because of the dock service from the camp. Each time you come in a dock hand is waiting at the dock, they tie you off, get you gas, fillet your fish, and get you fresh bait. No where else has anyone come close to this. Here is how I rate the place for everything else I look for on a scale of 1 to 10: Boats 8. Cedar strip with elec start 15hp, very comfy. Cabins 9. Clean with ample beds and supplies, 4 piece in each. Fishing 9. Walleye were on fire and quite a few pike mixed in. Portage lake was fun also. Food 7. The shore lunch is the big hit everyday. Service 10. Dock hands and room services were excellent. Jeff Skonieczny Ohio

Loch Island Never Disappoints
A friend and I have been visting Loch Island for about 6 years now. We've tried a few other places here and there but we seem to keep coming back. I attribute this to the owners. Andy and Amy are warm, welcoming, and always professional. Their lodge is extremely well run by a staff that takes great pride in what they do. The fishing. The fishing is good. Sometimes great. But mostly good. Never has a day gone by where we didn't catch our limit of walleye. On our best days we would put 20-30 fish in the boat each. On our worst day, maybe 10. Consistency is one of the lakes strong suits. Big fish for us were 4-5lbs although I have seen fish in the 7-8lb range. The lake. Wabatongushi is large lake with many bays. finding the fish can be a little intimidating on the first visit. First timers should definitely go out with a guide. The guides are incredibly knowlegable of the lake and you'd be wise to make friends because they will put you on spots that consistently produce fish. The food. Fresh home cooked meals. It's great. Shore lunch is an experience in and of itself. Fresh caught walleye and pike cooked over an open fire with a side of potatoes and eating it while looking out over the lake is something I look forward to all year long. The value. One of the things I appreciate most about Loch Island. There are no hidden costs. When you choose the American Plan, everything is included. Boat, gas, bait, ice, breakfast, lunch, dinner and most importantly, a guide your first day. A fishing liscence is the only additional cost I remember incurring after arriving at the lodge. Comfort and Convenience. The cabins are clean and the beds are comfortable. All the cabins have flushing toiletes and plenty of hot water for the shower. There is electricity 24hrs a day. Wireless intenet is also available. Overall, Loch Island is a wonderful lodge run by wonderful people in an absolutely beautiful setting. I have never left Loch Island disappointed. I have always left wishing for just one more day.

I have been to Camp Localsh for seven trips in 16 years. It is the most quiet and peaceful place I know. And the fishing is outstanding; plentiful and good sized. The staff is so nice and helpful. You are pampered and so well taken care of. This is not roughing it! It is worth every penny. See you next year at shore lunch!

I stayed at Loch Island Lodge about 10 years ago. The lodge and staff are very nice and they will do anything to help you out. My old man dumped one of his rods overboard in front of the lodge and one of the kids working up there spent half an hour swimming around diving trying to find his rod for him. We did the American plan and they feed you very well. Filets and Lobster one night. I would definitely recommend this lodge. We didn't catch a lot of fish, we were there in the middle of July.
